Beyond Appearances, Into His Light

I am not someone who usually gives much attention to world events or the news—even in my own country. Yet the deterioration I see in South Africa has reached a point where I feel compelled to pay attention. Separately, the case of Caleb Flynn has gripped me. It has been sobering to consider how easily we can live by surface appearances.

How long can an image conceal what is happening beneath it? How much do we really know when we rely only on what our eyes can see? Perhaps the most unsettling question is how easily we can deceive ourselves.

Jeremiah speaks of the deceitfulness of the human heart. Our thoughts, motives and desires can lead us into places we never imagined we would go. The next verse turns our attention towards the One who can truly search the heart and examine the mind: God Himself.

This brings conviction into my own life. How easily can Christian practices become a language we speak rather than a relationship in which we remain open and honest?

There are things we know we can hide from other people. We can also become skilled at explaining them to ourselves. But we can consciously choose to bring them into the light of Heaven—to come humbly into His Presence and listen as Holy Spirit reveals what we may not yet recognise within ourselves.

We all have intentions, desires and agendas. Only God sees the whole truth: within us, within our country and throughout the world. Nothing escapes His sight. His light exposes what harms us and calls us towards truth, repentance and freedom.

My confidence is in the salvation Jesus has secured, rather than in my own performance. Yet grace does not make our choices harmless. What we sow can bring consequences on this earth that devastate our lives and wound other people. Bringing something into His light matters—not only for our own freedom, but also for those affected by our choices.

I think, too, about South Africa. Could harmful agendas sometimes have been protected by people who sincerely meant well? In our desire to give everyone a fair opportunity, did we also make room to examine the character, conduct and accountability of those we trusted to govern?

Were we persuaded by appearances and political promises? Did we seek truth beyond the speeches? These questions invite discernment, including an honest examination of our own loyalties and assumptions.

Israel’s story gives us something to consider. Before Saul, God was already their King. Yet the people asked for a human king so they could be like the nations around them. Samuel warned them about what such a king would take from them, but they persisted.

Their story reminds me how readily we can place our security in visible power. Yet God continued working through their history. David would later become king, and Jesus would be born into his family line. Human failure did not bring God’s redemptive purpose to an end.

Scripture teaches us to pray for those in authority. I believe that prayer can include asking for truth, justice, accountability and deliverance from oppression.

The God who hears prayer also heard the cries of an enslaved people and called Moses to lead them out. Pharaoh’s power was formidable, but it was not ultimate. His chariots and army could not prevent the deliverance God had begun.

I do not presume to know exactly how God will act in our country. But I believe we can ask Him to uncover what is hidden, protect those who are vulnerable and lead us into truthful, courageous responses.

May the God who sees everything help us bring everything into His Presence—under His sight and into His light.

May He expose the darkness within us, as well as within systems and agendas that cause harm. May He give us humility to receive the truth, courage to respond to it and love that refuses to turn away.

May we become people who seek His face, welcome His searching light and walk with Him in what He reveals.

THE RETURN

Grace makes an honest life possible.

We can tell the truth, receive grace and take responsibility in the Presence of the One who has made a way for us to come near.
